PVC Insulated Power Cables & Wires
Description

INTRODUCTION:
Polyvinyl chloride compound (PVC) with its inherit characterstic of toughness and flexibility over a wide temperature range is used in the manufacture of cables. PVC cables are largely used for industrial type application. They are simple to terminate & joint, handle and have significant record of trouble-free service.

All the cables design described comply to BS 6346: "PVC insulated cable for electricity Supply" which specifies requirement for cable for operation at voltages upto and including 3300 volts. It includes armoured as well as unarmoured cables.

CABLE CONSTRUCTION:

Cables are manufactured to British Standard Specification (BSS) 6346: However cables can be manufactured to all other international standards and to any special specification and customer requirements.

CONDUCTORS: STRANDED COPPER:
These are high conductivity conductors which meet the requirements of BS 6360: "Copper Conductors in insulated cables and cords (metric units) " . Where possible conductors are shapedcompacted to reduce overall cable dimensions and give a smooth profile, While compacting number and size of wire are changed, therefore conductor sizes should be designated by nominal cross sectional area rather than by stranding configuration.

STRANDED ALUMINIUM:

These are high purity Aluminium and except for single core and the smallest size the conductors are shaped to produce the most compact design. The material properties and resistance are given in BS 6791: Aluminium Conductors in insulated cables (metric unit)".

INSULATION:
This consists of extruded, PVC conforming to BS 6746: "PVC Insulation and sheath of Electric Cables"
CORE IDENTIFICATION:
Core identification is by colour as follows:
NUMBER OF CORE: CORE COLOURS:
Single Red or Black
Two Red, Black
Three Red, Yellow, Blue
Four Red, Yellow, Blue, Black

Black denotes the neutral and colours are phase conductors.

Fillers/binder tape:
Polyproplyne fillers are included between laid up cores to give smooth profile and polyproplane
tape as a binder is used over laid up cores.

BEDDING:
The bedding consists of an extruded layer of PVC compound complying with BS 6746:

ARMOUR:
With all armoured cables the direction of lay of the armour is left hand and the size of the armour is as specified. For multi core cables the armour is a single layer of galvanised steel wires_ Single core cables for use on a.c. Circuits are armoured with non magnetic material eg, aluminium.

FINISH AND FINAL PROTECTIVE COVERING
The final protective covering for all cables consists of an extruded, black (unless specified) PVC oversheath which conforms to BS 6346: for thickness and to BS 6746: for properties.
The external surface is embossed with the voltage designation.

ELECTRICAL TESTING:
At the insulation stage all cores are spark tested according to conductor size & cable voltage. Finished cables have to pass a.c. Voltage withstand test.

PACKING
Cables are packed on wooden drums of suitable size to meet minimum bending radius criteria. Drums are duly lagged to protect cable being damaged during transportation. For convenience at the installation sites drums are marked with the "Direction of Rotation" instruction. To prevent ingress of moisture both ends of cable are capped and the ends are marked red and green. At red mark the sequence of cores is clock wise i.e. Red, Yellow, Blue & Black. At green mark the sequence of cores is counter clock wise i.e. Black, Yellow, Red.

BASIC ASSUMPTIONS AND CONDITIONS OF INSTALLATION:

AMBIENT AIR TEMPERATURE.......................................................... 30 ° C
MAXIMUM CONDUCTOR OPERATING
TEMPERATURE AT RATED CURRENT...............................................70 ° C

METHOD OF INSTALLATION:

Cables shall only be continuously operated at their full rating if the minimum current at which circuit protection is designed to operate does not exceed 1.5 times the values tabulated.

EFFECT OF GROUPING OF CABLES:

Single core cables installed in the manner indicated in the tabes. Twin and multicore installed in "defined conditions" in accordance with the lEE Wiring Regulations.

No reduction in rating is necessary providing that:

1. The horizontal clearance between circuit is
(A) Not less than six times the overall diameter of an individual cable
(b) Not less than the overall width of an individual circuit, except that the horizontal clearance need not in any case exceed 150 mm.
2.The vertical clearance between circuits is not less than 150 mm.
3. If the number of circuits exceeds 4, they are installed in a horizontal plane.

Cables shall only be continuously operated at their full rating if the minimum current at which circuit protection is designed to operate does not exceed 1.3 times the values tabulated.

METHOD OF INSTALLATION:
Cables installed in the manner indicated in the tables.

EFFECT OF GROUPING OF CABLES:
The current ratings given apply to one, twin or multi core cable, or a single set of single core cables forming a circuit. When two or more circuits are laid in closed proximity the ratings of the cables must be reduced by the group rating factors in ERA report.

RATING FACTORS FOR CABLES INSTALLED IN AIR

Mostly "in air" installations are in buildings, hence the ratings correspond to ambient air temperature of 30°C Conversion to any other ambient temperature is achieved by the use of taking factors given with the current rating tables.

Ratings for cables run in free air are on basis that they are shielded from the direct rays of the sun without restriction of ventilation.

DEFINED CONDITIONS OF INSTAllATION:

Defined conditions of installation are given below. These are extracted from lEE Regulations for the Electrical Equipment of Buildings
.

(a) Single Core Cable:
(1) Two or three single core cable are installed one above the other, fixed to the vertical surface of a wall or open cable trench as follows, the distance between the wall and the surface of the cable being at least 20mm in each instance. Cables in which the conductor cross sectional area does not exceed 185 mm2 are installed at a distance between centre of twice the overall diameter of the cable.
Cables in which the conductor cross-selectional area exceeds 185 mm2 are installed at a distance between centres of 90 mm. The ratings for two cables may be applied with safety in instances where, such ca91es are installed in horizontal formation on brackets fixed to a wall, either spaced as indicated above, or touching through out
(2) Three single core cables are installed in trefoil formation, fixed to the vertical surface of a wall or open cable trench, the cables touching through out and the distance between the wall and the surface of the nearest cable being atleast 20mm, or, alternatively, three single core cables are installed in trefoil formation and laid on a non-metallic floor the cables touching each other and the floor throughout. The cables are assumed to be remote from iron, steel or ferro-concrete , other than the cable supports.
.(b) Multicore Cables:
Cables of all types other than single core cables are installed singly, fixed to the vertical surface of a wall or open cable trench, the distance between the surface of the cable and the wall being at least 20mm in every instance.

The ratings given in Tables 16, 17, 18, 19, 28, 29, 30 & 31 for multicore cables are for cables installed under defined conditions

.

If it is necessary for cables to be installed at distances less than those described above, then the values tabulated under the heading "Clipped direct to a surface" in the lEE Wiring Regulations should be employed.
RATING FACTORS FOR CABLES LAID DIRECT IN GROUND:

Ratings for cables installed direct in the ground are based on values of soil temperature and soii thermal resistivity, which are generally representative of conditions in Pakistan. Rating factors to take account of variation in ground temperature are given with the current rating tables. Where conditions of operation can be fairly accurately estimated, and knowledge of soil along the route is available, it is possible to determine the ratings more precisely by the use ofthe soil thermal resistivity factors, group factors, and factors for the depths of laying given in Table 31, 32, 33 and 34, These factors are tabulated in more detail in ERA Report

Types of load are classified under three headings in ERA Report

TYPE A Cables carrying a constant load throughout the year.
TYPE B Cables carrying varying loads, maximum in summer.
TYPE C Cables carrying varying loads, maximum in winter.

With the type of load on the cable, it is possible to determine the soil thermal resistivity along the cable route in accrodince with recommendations in ERA Report

The term ducts applies to single way earthenware, fibre or ferrous pipes. Recommended inside and outside diameter of duct is 100mm and 130mm respectively for cables having overall diameter of upto 65mm. Similarly for cables having overall diameter above 65mm and upto 90mm the inside and outside duct diameter is 125mm and 160mm respectively.

Ratings for cables installed in single way ducts, underground, are based on values of soil temperature and soil thermal resistivity which are generally representative of conditions in Pakistan. Rating factors to take account of variation in ground temperature are given with the current rating tables where conditions of operation can be fairly accurately estimated, and knowledge of the sOil along the route is available. it is possible to determine the ratings more precisely by the use of the soil thermal resistivity factors, grouping factors and factors for the depth of laying given in tables 36 to
39. These factors are tabulated in more detail in ERA Report
